1. It depend on the type of job you have Holidays of the United States vary with local observance. Strictly speaking, the United States does not have national holidays. The federal government recognizes ten annual and one quadrennial holiday for its employees. The annual federal holidays are widely observed by state and local governments, however they may alter the dates of observance or add or subtract holidays according to local custom. Pursuant to the Uniform Holidays Bill of 1968 (taking effect in 1971), most official holidays are observed on the Monday closest to the actual date of the holiday, except for New Year's Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, American Thanksgiving, and Christmas. There are also U.S. state holidays particular to individual U.S. states.
2. Well, paid holidays will vary from state to state and from job to job. For example, a postal worker or teacher will get a lot of paid holidays because it's a government job, but people in medicine that work in hospitals might not get most holidays. If you work in the ER as a nurse or doctor, you most likely won't be getting off for holidays like the 4th of July or Labor Day. It also will depend on if you are working full time or part time. If you work full time, you will get paid holidays regardless of what kind of job you work, most likely, but if you work only part time you probably aren't going to get paid if your store or business is closed in observation of a holiday. So, depending on your job, state, and your status as full time or part time, and your "benefits", you may or may not get paid holidays. Someone holding a job as a teacher gets all the major holidays off, like Christmas, New Year's, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, etc. But the rest of us poor fools, if we work part time, might not get ANY paid holidays. And for full time people, again, it's at the company's discretion whether or not they'll give you benefits on the federal holidays.
