I am thinking about trying to get a part time job to get some extra cash for the holidays but the only places that I see hiring are department stores and they are only paying $7.00-8.00 and you can only work 15 hours a week. Have you ever worked at a job for the holidays where you made great money? Where are the best places to work for the holidays where you can make the most money? Any ideas on commission types of jobs would be helpful too. By the way, I am WAY over 18 so I don't want to babysit, or work in a grocery store.

What is the Canadian Government law for holidays? My parents received a notice from the federal government CIC office to write the citizenship exam. The company (the supervisor not the company itself) that my dad works for refused to give him a paid holiday. I thought that any federal government “request to appear” notices for things like jury duty, citizenship exam, etc automatically consider to me a mandatory holiday. I mean if a person is reporting to Government of Canada, the Canadian companies are obligated to give paid holiday for that day or period. Please give me some advice. I think my parents have faced discrimination in this company. I need to make sure the Government of Canada position on this before do anything. So, is a person is entitle to paid holidays for Canadian Federal Government orders? Any, information is highly appreciated.
How can I keep my children amused during the school summer holidays? Particularly with the credit crunch in mind? How do your pets celebrate the holidays with you? What are in their stockings? Ours have stockings and each has a box of bark bars, some treats, chews, each has a toy and a ball. We'll wrap presents loosely and then let them "nose" them open. They get all giddy and excited when it's the holidays. They KNOW they have stockings and will be real excited to dig into them. They won't be allowed but a few treats of their choice and the rest of the treats will go in their treat box. Tomorrow, they will get some turkey breast (each one of them, no skin or bones) as a "treat" with their food. How do you celebrate?

How do I deal with the problem of not celebrating holidays when I become a kindergarten teacher? I am a Jehovah's Witness and therefore don't celebrate any national holidays, but "when I grow up" I want to be a kindergarten teacher. I already know FOR SURE this is what I want to be and have helped out in elementary schools to make sure it is the right thing for me. Now I am just wondering how I would deal with the issue of holidays since I know they are a big deal in the younger grades. Any kindergarten teachers out there who can give me some advice?

How do you feel about working holidays? I work in an office and they have decided the office needs to be open on holidays. Currently they are getting volunteers to work the holidays but if that fails they will schedule them. I feel enough is enough and holidays should be just that. Business has too much control over us. When events like 911 happen we are in the dark with no radio or tv to keep us alert. I think it is sad that we are letting big business control everything and our families have to suffer. What are your thoughts? We get time and a half pay also but some things are more important than money. I understand the customer is the reason we have our jobs. I am a customer also. I don't expect people to have to work on holidays. If they chose to work that is fine. When peope volunteer to do this though it eventually becomes mandatory and that is where I have concerns. My business doesn't make money they protect their own money and investments. People don't want phone calls on the holidays. I know I don't. Holidays include Christmas and Thanksgiving.

I have just recently moved up to a full-time position at work, and have 14 holidays (not including weekends or stat holidays) to use before December 31. Between now and the December, when are some acceptable times to use my holidays?

Short term car insurance only provides cover for over 21s (that I can find) whereas I am 19, and pay as you drive policies that I have looked into seem to cost around 1000 pounds a year - and I am only paying 500 for a full years cover at the moment. Anyone have any ideas?

Besides visiting parks, what can I do in Disney World during the Winter Holidays? I am currently debating to either choose to go to Disney World twice in one year - we have many points to spend on a trip down twice, but that means we can't go down again next year. Because of the jacket-weather, we find that going to a water park or chilling (pun intended) by the pool would be not only be a freezing affair, but not smart. We need some ideas for activities down in the Disney area in Florida (besides going to parks, that's a given) that will keep us occupied. We are thinking about an eight-night trip, and covering each park at least once. Also, if you can tell me, have your past experiences going to Disney World in the winter holidays been nice? Thanks!

Are all holidays "family" holidays, or are they "mixed" (adult, children, combined)? My personal feelings on the issue is that holidays like Valentine's Day, New Years Eve, Saint Patrick's Day are "adult" holidays and children can enjoy them when they grow up. Holidays like Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, are primarily "family" holidays. Birthdays belong to the individual. I do have friends that try and make every holiday revolve around the children. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I also think that certain portions of holidays are for children, i.e. Easter egg hunts, pinatas, Santa, etc... Now, I realize that almost any holiday celebration can be transformed into adult or family or children. I'm asking who people think the main unmorphed holiday celebrators should be and which holidays belong to which celebrators. No judgement here, just curious as to what people think and why.
God bless the holidays, sorry Pauline? From: Pauline Lewis, Human Resources Director TO: All Employees DATE: 4th November 2007 Re: Office Christmas Party I'm happy to inform you that the company Christmas Party will take place on December 23rd, starting at noon in the private function room at the Grill House. There will be a cash bar and plenty of drinks! We'll have a small band playing traditional carols. Please feel free to sing along. Don't be surprised if the Managing Director shows up dressed as Santa Claus! A Christmas tree will be lit at 1.00 p.m. Exchange of gifts among employees can be done at that time, however, no gift should be over $10.00 to make the giving of gifts easy for everyone's pockets. This gathering is only for employees! The Managing Director will make a special announcement at the Party. I wish a Merry Christmas to you and your family. Sincerely, Pauline ********************************************************************************************* FROM: Pauline Lewis, Human Resources Director TO: All Employees DATE: 5th November 2007 RE: Holiday Party In no way was yesterday's memo intended to exclude our Jewish employees. We recognize that Chanukah is an important holiday, which often coincides with Christmas, though unfortunately not this year. However, from now on we're calling it our 'Holiday Party'. The same policy applies to any other employees who are not Christians. There will be no Christmas tree or Christmas carols sung. We will have other types of music for your enjoyment. Happy now? Happy Holidays to you and your family, Pauline ************************************************************************************************ FROM; Pauline Lewis, Human Resources Director TO: All Employees DATE: 6th November 2007 RE: Holiday Party Regarding the note I received from a member of Alcoholics Anonymous requesting a non-drinking table, you didn't sign your name. I'm happy to accommodate this request, but if I put a sign on a table that reads, "AA Only", you wouldn't be anonymous anymore!!! How am I supposed to handle this? Somebody?! Forget about the gift exchange, no gift exchange allowed now since the Union Officials feel that $10.00 is too much money and Management believe $10.00 is a little cheap. NO GIFT EXCHANGE WILL BE ALLOWED. Pauline. ************************************************************************************************ FROM: Pauline Lewis, Human Resources Director TO: All Employees DATE: 7th November 2007 RE: Holiday Party What a diverse group we are! I had no idea that December 20th begins the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which forbids eating and drinking during daylight hours. There goes the party! Seriously, we can appreciate how a luncheon at this time of year does not accommodate our Muslim employees' beliefs. Perhaps the Grill House can hold off on serving your meal until the end of the party or else package everything up for you to take home in a little foil doggy bag. Will that work? Meanwhile, I've arranged for members of Weight Watchers to sit farthest from the dessert buffet and pregnant women will get the table closest to the toilets. Gays are allowed to sit with each other, lesbians do not have to sit with gay men, each will have their own table. Yes, there will be flower arrangements for the gay men's table too. To the person asking permission to cross dress - no cross dressing allowed. We will have booster seats for short people. Low fat food will be available for those on a diet. We cannot control the salt used in the food, so we suggest those people with high blood pressure taste the food first. There will be fresh fruits as dessert for diabetics. The restaurant cannot supply "No Sugar" desserts. Sorry! Did I miss anything?!?!?!?!?! Pauline ************************************************************************************************* FROM: Pauline Lewis, Human Resources Director TO: All F******g Employees DATE: 8th November 2007 RE: The F******g Holiday Party Vegetarian pricks - I've had it with you people!!! We're going to keep this party at the Grill House whether you like it or not, so you can sit quietly at the table furthest from the "grill of death", as you so quaintly put it, you'll get your f******g salad bar, including organic tomatoes, but you know tomatoes have feelings too. They scream when you slice them. Oh yes, I've heard them scream. I'm hearing them scream right NOW! I hope you all have a rotten holiday. Drink, drive, and die! The B***ch from H**L!!! ************************************************************************************************* FROM: John Bishop - Acting Human Resources Director TO: All Employees DATE: 9th November 2007 RE: Pauline Lewis and Holiday Party I'm sure I speak for all of us in wishing Pauline Lewis a speedy recovery, and I'll continue to forward your cards to her. In the meantime, the Management has decided to cancel our Holiday Party and instead, give everyone the afternoon of the 23rd December off with full pay. Forgot to put this on for Christmas
Official holidays? it is interesting that Islam is the fastest growing religion and it is the leading religion too, i mean it has the most believers yet our holidays are not approved/confirmed (at least in my area), but why?? even jewish holidays are considered holidays, why can not they tolerate our holidays and giving us day-offs? Do we have to request the day-offs as a personal holiday, like a sick leave but the christian/pagan holidays are approved and they don't have to request day-offs when they want to miss some days from work.. or is it only in europe and you can do what you want in the states and they pay the day-off? i randomly block certain people
Holidays is Sales Roles? Hi, I hope you can help. I've always had a role in marketing jobs where i was able to take my allocated holidays whenever i wanted. In my current sale role however, my holidays are subject to the following factors: - Make sure none of the part - time sales staff are on holiday during proposed time. (i am full time, so this basically means i cant take School Holidays off, and Mon/Fris are difficult...i.e if i do get the approval i am reminded why i shouldnt have been allowed them off) - Make sure it is not during a bad month (i.e it is not a month where sales figures may be low) - Ensure it is not Month End - Make sure my line manager isnt the only sales staff in the office (but on numerous occasions i have been the only one in the office) Basically last year, i had to take my holidays on odd days so for instance Wed/Thurs, each week and Thurs/Fri/Mon when close to Christmas. I wasnt able to take a week off because of above reasons. Is this normal?!!
Does an employer have to pay holiday pay for every holiday or can they choose what holidays they want? I don't get paid holiday pay for working holidays. My employer, I guess, does not consider a holiday, a holiday, so they don't have to pay me holiday pay? Does an employer have to pay holiday pay for every holiday or can they pick and choose what holidays they want to pay their employees holiday pay?
What holidays are there in the year? I was just wondering, what with the wide range of religious and national holidays are there any days without a holiday? To test this theory i'm askinging whether people could post the days of holidays, (if it covers a certain period of days list them all as day1, day2) in order from the first of january, in the following format. Month & Day - Holiday - Religion (if it's not a religion just put national) e.g. December 25th - Christmas - Christianity (Yes it does include School Holidays, cos it's a holiday, hopefully i can make a calender out of this.)
Are children always included in holiday celebrations, or are some holidays adult and some others family? I posted a similar question in another section, but I wasn't getting many responses. I know others who make everything adults only, with similar results. I also think that certain portions of some holidays are for children, i.e. I'm asking for opinions, not what others do or don't do. What do you feel about it?
is public holiday = legal holiday? how bout bank holidays? is public holiday = legal holiday? how bout bank holidays? is it same with legal holiday? thanks
What holidays should i celebrate? I am puerto rican and non religious now what holidays should i celebrate? would it be weird to celebrate a chinese, mexican, or african holiday? and what about religious holidays? could i celebrate muslim, christian, and jewish holidays even if i am not religious? and virtually every holiday is celebrated in america right? because of all the different people here.

"Happy Holidays" vs. "Merry Christmas" you do understand why, right? After reading some questions and answers, I got the idea some people think "Happy Holidays" is supposed to REPLACE talking about Christmas. However, the reason people feel one should say "Happy Holidays" is to incorporate all religions and celebrations of the same season into one greeting so as not to be saying Christmas when someone is actually celebrating Kwanza, not to try to take religion out of holidays or something. There's more going on than just Christmas, plus it covers New Years which most people celebrate in addition to a religious holiday (or secular Christmas). Understanding that, does it still bother you that "Happy Holidays" is more widely promoted? [As for Christmas Trees vs. Holiday Trees, is the decorated tree a major symbol for any religion other than Christian and secular Christmas? If not, there's no need for the switch to "Holiday Trees". I'm just not aware of any other use of the symbol (and know it started with pagans), so let me know if I'm wrong here.] I think some people are still missing the point. There is more than just one holiday going on. It's not all about Christians. It's just respecting more than one holiday. And Jews don't send Happy Hannukah cards to non-Jews. If they were sending a card to a non-Jew, they would send a Happy Holidays card or a card celebrating the religion of their recipient.
federal holidays? how many people think federal holidays were created to generate money for the economy?i thought holidays were about friends and family, the holiday itsself, not going to the movies or the mall, shouldnt everyone be entitled to celebrate holidays?those people working on holidays dont have any holiday at all,i seriously believe the economy would not be affected if buisnesses close for certain holidays or am i just being selfish,oh my goodness i know im gonna get it for this one.....
